So the search makes sense: if it is that far, surely you fly. And you can — just not by helicopter, and not as a scenic flight in the way the phrase suggests.

The economics are simple and unforgiving. A scenic helicopter at Yulara does six to ten short flights a day from the same pad, and every one of them ends where it started. Verdict: fly Qantas if you are short on time, drive if you have four days and want the Red Centre rather than just the rock. The drive is genuinely good — the country changes three times between the two ends — but it is a full day, not a transfer.
The rock you will see first is not Uluru
About three-quarters of the way along the Lasseter Highway a huge flat-topped mesa rises out of the plain on the left. Almost every first-time visitor takes a photograph of it believing it is Uluru. It is Mount Conner — larger in area than Uluru, entirely different in shape, and roughly a hundred kilometres short of the real thing.
It is worth knowing about for two reasons. It saves you the moment of confusion on the drive, and it is one of the things the longest scenic flight at Yulara is built around: the 36-minute Grand View is the only helicopter route that lines up Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Mount Conner in a single frame.

Booking a hotel in Alice Springs to see Uluru
It is 465 kilometres away. Alice Springs is a destination in its own right, not a base for the rock — stay at Ayers Rock Resort for the nights you want to be at Uluru.
